The Garinagu Wagia  Campaign

The goal of the Garinagu Wagia (We Are Garifunas) Campaign, is to educate and  create awareness and    appreciation of the Garifuna culture. The Garifuna Coalition Inc., in partnership with other community-based organizations, presents a rich collection of programs through the year that promote cross-cultural understanding and celebrate our history, culture and religion, and their importance in shaping and enriching New York City.

On May 18th, 2001 the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared The Garifuna Culture was among “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangibles Heritage of Humanity.” If conscious intervention is not done all aspects of the culture could be lost very quickly.

The Garifuna Coalition USA, Inc is the organization that is responsible for safeguarding preserving and revitalizing of the Garifuna language, music and dance in the United States.

 As part of the commitment, it signed a Memorandum of Understanding with The Garifuna Heritage Foundation of St Vincent and the Grenadines to collaborate in practical ways to support the Renaissance of the Garifuna Heritage and Culture in St. Vincent and the Grenadines "Yurumein" the Ancestral Homeland of the Garifuna people.and to promote the Garifuna Heritage and Culture in all parts of the Garifuna Diaspora.

It has launched a campaign through  Facebook’s Causes to  rally support and  raise awareness about  the Preservation of the Garifuna Culture.

Objectives

• Preserve the Garifuna Culture through its Language, music, food, dances, crafts, arts and rituals.
• Develop programs which will bring out the diversity and the richness of the Garifuna.
• Maintain contact with Garifuna communities and to cooperate in matters which will help preserve the Garifuna Heritage.

The Drama of King   Shotaway 

Although there is no official record of when the first Garinagu arrived in North America, a New York City theater playbill revealed that Garifunas may have migrated during the nineteenth century. The playbill was for an 1823 play about Garifuna hero Joseph Chatoyer. Playwright William Henry Brown was believed to be a Garifuna from St. Vincent. His play, The Drama of King Shotoway, a play which is recognized as the first black drama of the American Theatre, which has as its subject the 1795 Black Caribs Insurrection in the Island of Saint Vincent.

La meta de la campaña  Garinagu Wagia (somos Garífunas), es educar y crear conocimiento y aprecio de la cultura de Garífuna. La Coalición Garífuna USA, Inc., en sociedad con otras  organizaciones comunitarias, presenta una colección rica de programas durante el año que promueven la comprensión entre lasculturas y celebran nuestra historia, cultura y religión, y su importancia en la formación  y enriquecimiento de  la ciudad de Nueva York.

El 18 de mayo de  2001 La Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (UNESCO)  declaró la Cultura Garífuna " Obras Maestras del Patrimonio Oral e Inmaterial de la Humanidad. Si no se hace intervención consciente todos  los aspectos de la cultura se podrían perder  muy rápidamente.

La Coalición Garifuna USA, Inc es la contraparte en los Estados Unidos  encargada de la salvaguardia del patrimonio inmaterial Garífuna proclamado por la UNESCO .

Como parte del compromiso, que firmó un memorando de entendimiento con el Fundación del Patrimonio Garifuna de San Vicente y las Granadinas para colaborar en formas prácticas para apoyar el Renacimiento del  Patrimonio y Cultura  Garifuna en San Vicente y las Granadinas "Yurumein" la  Patria Ancestral del  Pueblo Garifuna para promover el Patrimonio y Cultura  Garifuna en todas partes de la Diáspora.

Se ha lanzado una campaña a través de Causas en  Facebook para obtener  apoyo y crear conciencia sobre la   Preservación de la Cultura Garífuna.

Objetivos

• Conservar la cultura garífuna a través de su lenguaje, música, alimentos, bailes, artesanías, Artes y rituales.
• Desarrollar programas que aportan a la diversidad y la riqueza de los Garifunas.
• Mantener contacto con las Comunidades Garifunas  y cooperar en asuntos que ayudarán a preservar el patrimonio Garifuna.

El Drama del Rey  Shotaway

Aunque no hay record oficial de la llegada de los Garífunas a América del Norte, un programa de teatro en la Ciudad de Nueva York revela que los Garífunas pudieron haber inmigrado durante el siglo 19. El programa era de una Obra Teatral de 1823 titulada El  Drama del Rey Shotaway - Una obra teatral por William Henry Brown, que es reconocida como la primera obra de drama del Teatro Negro Americano, cuyo tema central es la insurrección Garífuna en 1795 en San Vicente, dirigida por el Jefe Supremo José Chatuye.

18 de mayo de 2012 - Aniversario de laProclamación la Cultura  Garífuna como Obra Maestra de la Herencia Intangible y Oral de la Humanidad por  la UNESCO.
